Honesty Is The Best Policy
If you don't have a policy for the safe disposal of confidential material you need one, however basic. By creating your own policy you will simply and efficiently identify the areas of risk within your workplace.

Credit Card or Bank details:
Destroy immediately or store securely, don't leave lying around.

Bin Audit:
Spot check documents in the office waste, should they be there?

Hot Spots:
Fax machines, printers and photocopiers, look for disregarded documents, also check the bins next to machines for mis-feeds or paper jams.

Confidential Information:
Store confidential or sensitive information in a secure place and limit access.

Digital Versions
Ensure documents on CDs and DVDs are securely disposed of, most good quality office shredders can shred these.

Don't Wait For Collection
Delaying shredding a document is an unnecessary risk, once a document has been identified as confidential waste, shred it.

Deploy The Best Defence
All offices should use a 'cross cut' shredder (Confetti), minimum DIN level 3, the lower level strip cut machines are only suitable for bulk destruction of non-confidential waste.
